Deuteronomy Chapter 34

This chapter is about Moses’ actual death. Moses went to Mount Nebo like God told him to do. Then Joshua takes over, as leader of the Israelites. This is the last chapter of Deuteronomy! Congrats, y’all! We made it!!! Next is the Book of Joshua. We hope that you y’all enjoy this post!

Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo. From the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. (Jericho is going to come back in the Book of Joshua.) There God showed Moses the whole Promised Land. Every border. Every. Single. One.

Then God says, “Moses, my guy. This is the Promised Land. That I promised to Abraham, Isaac, & ya boy, Jacob. Remember when I said I was gonna give it to your descendants. I let you SEE the Promised Land. But you, Moses, shall not pass!” (Yes, that’s a Lord of the Rings reference. We’ll show ourselves out.)

Then Moses died. Right there in Moab. He was buried in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor. But to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was 120 years old when he died. Yet his eyes & strength weren’t gone.

The Israelites grieved for Moses for 30 days. Until the days of weeping & mourning were over.

Now Joshua was filled with the Spirit of wisdom. (We think that this is a proto-Holy Spirit. It was pretty much the Holy Spirit before the day of Pentecost.) Because Moses laid hands on him. (This isn’t the modern idiom. This is an actual ritual that is still practiced today.) So the Israelites listened to Joshua.

Since then no prophet has risen in Israel, like Moses, whom God knew face to face. (There would be prophets after Moses. But none that would actually talk to the Big Guy face to face.) For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all of Israel.
